International Relations and European Politics Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany)
Founded in 1992, the Institute of Political Science at Martin Luther University took on its current form in the wake of German reunification. With a community of 942 political science students, the Institute seamlessly combines international relations and European politics in research and teaching. A strong focus on global and European dynamics underscores its commitment to the study of transformations in international and European politics. Research at the Institute addresses the ever-changing landscape of international governance and the dynamics of global security. Complementing these core areas, the Institute is actively engaged in non-proliferation and disarmament as well as arms control and emerging technologies, recognizing their central role in shaping contemporary international relations. The Institute’s tradition of close collaboration with practitioners to provide knowledge transfer, capacity building, and policy advice, ensures that research findings contribute to policymaking and effective communication, and embodying the Institute’s commitment to bridging theory and practice.

Prof. Dr. Johannes Varwick holds the Chair of International Relations and European Politics at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg since 2013, and was President of the German Security Policy Association from 2019 to 2021. He received his Ph.D. in 1989 with a dissertation on security and integration in Europe and has since edited and authored several standard works in German international relations studies. |

PD Dr. Jana Windwehr is research associate at the Chair of International Relations and European Politics at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg since 2013 and research coordinator at the Otto-Suhr-Institute of the Freie Universität Berlin since 2021. She studied in Kiel and Oslo, received her PhD in 2010, and completed her habilitation in 2021. Since then, her research has focused on European social security. |

Oscar Prust, M.A. is a research associate at the Chair of International Relations and European Politics, where he works on artificial intelligence in international arms policy and legislative-executive relations in foreign policy. He studied political science and law in Germany and France with a focus on international law and international security policy, and is currently working on his Ph.D. on parliamentary involvement in military AI. |
