Chile assumes the HCoC rotating Chairmaniship for 2024-2025

On 11 April 2024, Ambassador O’Leary from the Republic of Ireland officially handed over the Chairmanship of The Hague Code of Conduct to Chile at the occasion of the 23nd Annual Regular Meeting of subscribing states in Vienna. Ambassador Alex Wetzig will lead the Chilean effort for the universalisation of the Code during this coming year. Chile already assumed the Chairmanship of the Code in 2003-2004.

The new Chair is Ambassador Alex Wetzig, Permament Representative of Chile to the United Nations in Vienna.

During his career, Mr Wetzig, who is also Ambassador to Austria and non-resident Ambassador to Slovakia and Slovenia, has served in various capacities, among them:

Secretary General of Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2022-2023); Head of Energy and Technology and Innovation Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2021-2022); Deputy Permanent Representative of Chile to the UNESCO (2016-2021); Chief of Cabinet of the Director General of International Economic Relations and Deputy Head of the Europe, Africa and Middle East Department, Directorate of Bilateral Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2014-2016), First Secretary, Mission of Chile to the EU in Brussels (2011-2014); Chief of Unit Peru, Assistant Directorate General for Border Countries and Regional Affairs (2010); Chief of Staff, Director General of International Economic Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2008-2010); Second and First Secretary at the Embassy in Paris (2003-2008); Second Secretary, Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (2002-2003), Second Secretary, General Directorate of Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2001); Third and Second Secretary at the Embassy in Prague (1995-2000).

Mr. Wetzig holds a degree in history from the Catholic University of Valparaiso, an advanced diploma in social sciences from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences and a degree in international Studies from the Diplomatic School of Spain. He speaks English, French and Spanish.
